4/22 I have been informed that Harrison’s coarse would be a better diet for my Eclectus than Pretty Bird Species Select.
In the past, I was told not to feed Parrot food to my Eclectus because of digestive tract differences in Amazons and Eclectus. What do you suggest with your experience with the different foods? Thanks for the help. Jeanne
Hi there, please read
Setting The Record Straight About Feeding Eclectus Parrots
That said Harrisons High Potency (coarse) would be an acceptable pellet for your bird, NOT the Adult Lifetime Harrisons.
This seed mix by Volkman is made just for Eclectus, no vitamins added.
Best of luck – Thank you,
Catherine
Feathered Factoid:
Eclectus Parrots are sexually dimorphic – you can tell their sex by the color of their feathers
As recently as 10 or 15 years ago, zoos would put 2 red or 2 green Eclectus Parrots together in the hopes of breeding. That bred nothing but disappointment.
Bird food for eclectus parrots must be free from vitamin additives because eclectus parrots have elongated digestive systems. When vitamins remain in an eclectus parrots digestive system for a long time they could become toxic thus harming the bird.
It is important with eclectus parrots to supply lots of fresh fruits and vegetables along with their birdseed or bird pellet diet. An all-seed diet can trigger neurological behaviors like toe-tapping and abnormal elongated beak growth.
Eclectus parrots are sexually dimorphic meaning the males are green and the females are red with some blue feathers. Eclectus parrots make great family pets is they are not too noisy and are easily socialized. As with all caged birds, their bird food diet should reflect their lifestyle.
Birds that are flighted and move about the house while climbing up and down ladders are going to require a higher level of protein than birds that have clipped wings and remain in their cage the majority of the day.
