Kathy S. asks:
What is Chop?
Hi Kathy,
Chop is a term used for the result of mixing together random or a stated recipe for a vegetable-based diet for birds.
It can contain anything from spinach, kale, beans, grains, vegetables and/or fruits.
We feel too much emphasis is placed on giving the birds this mixture.
Chop is good but should be a small portion of the bird’s diet so it eats more of a seed and or pelleted diet which has more protein and nutrients.
A small amount, a teaspoon to a tablespoon of chop is plenty for a small bird served in a separate dish while still providing dishes with seeds and or pellets.
Then the chop dish removed after a few hours to avoid spoilage.
For our birds, we use a bag of generic frozen mixed vegetables and blend it up in a food chopper with a bit of fresh kale, broccoli, apple.
We do this fresh daily and the birds really like it. But it isn’t meant to fill them up.
You will find the actual nutritional value of bird chop in this post:
