We often get questions about feeding peanuts and sunflower seeds to parrots. Peanut and sunflower kernels are a great source of protein for parrots when not over fed and are carefully calculated within the diet.

The concern for feeding peanuts is that the SHELLS are known to harbor the mold Aspergillus flavus which can cause Aspergillosis in parrots. Tropican and Tropimix parrot food only contain de-hulled human grade peanuts.

And all formulas developed by HARI (Hagen Avicultural Research Institute) have been very carefully calculated and go through a rigorous 3-stage testing – which is unprecedented among bird food makers.

EACH batch goes through two onsite tests at Hagen Industries and final batch test at the HARI facility (the final and 3rd step in our testing process means EACH batch is tested and fed to the HARI flock prior to distribution to retail/consumers).

At a time when most bird food companies have shut their research centers, HARI continues its ongoing work on the research and development of advanced bird nutrition. In fact, HARI is the longest-standing research facility dedicated to studying the care and breeding of parrots.

You can not buy “holistic” bird food or any holistic pet food for that matter. Somewhere at some point in time, the word “holistic” came to mean “healthy”.

Here’s the problem. “Holistic” is not a thing, it is multifaceted a point of view. No “thing” can be holistic – not a food – not a car – not a plant.

adjective PHILOSOPHY

characterized by comprehension of the parts of something as intimately interconnected and explicable only by reference to the whole.

characterized by the treatment of the whole person, taking into account mental and social factors, rather than just the physical symptoms of a disease.

now you know.

We advocate that you look at your bird(s) “holistically” meaning: nutrition – bird cage environment – lighting/light cycles – out of the bird age environment – clipped or flighted – training  – sexuality – species – foraging/enrichment opportunities – exercise – frequency of bathing – other feathered flock members – human flock members

We took them out of the sky. It’s time to step up.

BTW – the second largest provider of peanuts on the planet is South America.

The largest collection of parrots on the planet is South America.

Why haven’t parrots ben falling out of the sky from getting sick on peanuts for millennia?

“just sayin”
