Nancy M. writes concerning her budgies cere,
Hello, this is a picture of our parakeet Melon (above) who is around 18 months old.
I contacted you when we got her because it took her a long time to fly and to develop the way our other parakeets had.
Catherine kindly responded and eventually Melon was able to fly and seemed to have no other issues.
My concern now is the appearance of the area above her beak which I believe is the cere.
It may be hard to tell from the picture but it looks to me like it is very dry and enlarged.
No signs of discomfort or distress that I can see.
Any thoughts? I really enjoy receiving your email every Sunday. Thanks.
It is very good to hear your little one is doing well and able to fly now.
The cere on parakeets is smooth and tight when they are young and when mature, the cere can appear larger, chunkier, and less neat due to hormones.
There is no need for concern.
