How Do I Reduce Wasted Bird food?

Last Updated on by Mitch Rezman

I’ve been feeding my grey Loving World/Hari premium large parrot food. Her feathers have improved, but I notice there’s a lot of waste.

She doesn’t like the tropican biscuits, and doesn’t always eat much of the small black sunflower seeds.

Frankly, I don’t know what she does eat. I need to reorder. I want to continue witlh this food, but would like to suppliment with another food with th e thought to eventually switching.Could you please advise on alternative foods. Thanks you. Lita L

Dear Lita

You might consider switching to or mixing in Hagen Tropimix Large Parrot. It is 100% edible with no shells. There are nut meats, dried fruits and vegetable and yes, Hagen Pellets, but the smaller ones (Parrot Sticks, not the Biscuits).

Also, if you are not sure what your bird IS eating out of the mix, you may be filling the bowl too full.

Start with a quarter cup in a large heavy bowl. I prefer to feed on the bottom of the cage on top of a fresh piece of newspaper, when they bird flings the food (they all do), some will end up on the paper for a second chance.

At the end of the day, look at what is left. If it is all gone and she ate it, give her some more to get through the day. If she tossed it, give her less the next day. A day or two of less food, she will start trying some of the other pieces she normally tosses.
