The original question on Quora verbatim ~ “Do any bird species live only in the hollows of trees and not build their own nests? If so, what kind of bird is it and why don’t they build their own nests as other birds do”?
My answer on the big “Q” was,
“Out of the 500 to 700 or so species that fall under the umbrella of parrots – parakeets aka hookbills psittacines”.
I’ll take a moment to refine that answer now.
That said
the Quaker parrot aka Monk parakeet is the ONLY species that builds a nest.
Quaker’s nests are large enough to house hundreds of birds communally, through brutally cold winters in major cities like Chicago Illinois.
Fast forward to the end for a shocker.
