I’ve been using the Zoo Med Avian sun floor lamp for my parakeet. The last few weeks she has really drawn an interest in it.
There are reflectors in it and that is what she is drawn to. She is now to the point of jumping up to the light hitting the lightbulb or the hood of it.
Sometimes she climbs upside down on the top of the cage when she is locked in it.
I took the reflectors out but was seeing that the hood was getting pretty warm.
I thought that it may possibly melt so I put the reflectors back in.
She goes straight for the lamp when her door is open and I have to watch her like a hawk.
I’m getting frustrated over it. I have a metal clamp on the light set as you sell in your store, but I’m afraid the metal would get hot and she would accidentally fly into it.
What would be recommended so she can be safe and get out of this fixation- as well as save my sanity?! Lol.
Dear Adrianne
She is lonely and is trying very hard to get to the other bird reflected in the light shield.
Budgies are flock animals and if you and she are not real buddies, then she needs one.
Get her a mirror or a cage mate. If a cage mate, preferably a female so you avoid hormonal issues, fighting, etc.
A mirror at the end of her perch will make her happy and should help stop the reflector issue.

Hi Catherine,
Dear Arianne
If the bird was bonded to you or another bird that is there, then a mirror could be a problem as it might cause the bird to hang around the mirror like it is trying to do with the reflector and thus undo your taming or conflict with its cage mate.
But it has no one. Even if you are there, you are not its first choice of a buddy.
Birds of a feather stick together and you have no feathers.
The radio helps it not feel exposed to danger as when there are no sounds it can cause the bird to feel that the quiet is due to a danger coming.
But the radio does nothing for the company it desires. It still can suffer from loneliness.
Mirrors are VERY good for single budgies who are stuck in a cage alone.
If you later on decide to get another budgie, you can remove the mirror..
Regards,
Catherine
