Sheila J. asks:
Why is my female budgie being so selfish and mean to her partner they have been together 1 yr and all of a sudden she won’t even let him eat.
I have to watch her shes real mean to him.
Catherine replied
Dear Sheila
Most likely she is hormonal and wants his attention to mate with her.
I recommend that you add additional dishes of food and water so the cage has two of each.
Also, how large is the cage?
If small (18″X18″ or under) he has no place to escape her and could be worn down triggering illness.
Of course, it could also be in the other direction if he becomes hormonal and constantly chases her to mate. he could do even more damage to her.
Most likely this is occurring due to poor lighting over their cages.
Do you have a full spectrum bulb placed directly above the cage?
Best as close as possible to the top. On 12 hours and off 12 hours on a timer?
Without good lighting, birds can become overly hormonal in our homes.
Especially at this time of year.
How we light our (8) budgie aviary
I recommend a light treatment to shut down the raging hormones.
The set up mentioned above would be left ON for a solid 72 hours which then would reset the Circadian Rhythm in their brains.
After 72 hours you would go back to 12 hours on and 12 hours off every day forever.
Best on a timer so you don’t have to remember.
This should help.
Please read these articles on lighting from our blog.
Kindest regards,
Catherine
