Old School Falconry Jargon Untangled

Last Updated on February 16, 2023 by Mitch Rezman

per Craig Hendee – In the case of the Peregrine only, the males are called Tiercels.
Throughout history, if you said Tiercel, it meant male Peregrine.
The female is called the falcon.
If you said the falcon, it meant and was understood to be a female Peregrine.
Nowadays only the purists or those with great knowledge of the history of falconry and its language would understand it as such.

Eclectus Parrots – Great Family Birds

Last Updated on October 2, 2023 by Mitch Rezman

Surely the most notable thing about Eclectus parrots is their dimorphic sexual coloration. About 25% of all parrots are sexually dimorphic meaning you can tell the difference between the male and the female bird by their color.

The name Eclectus actually comes from the world electric because of this species coloration. Female Eclectus parrots have a the heavier looking body and are predominately red in color. Subspecies are notable for their lavender-ish and blue breast feathers and the daisy yellow tail bands of the Vosmaeri’s. The brilliant red Eclectus’ body is accented by its black beak.

Bird Food Confusion – Seeds, Pellets, Organic – What’s Best?

Last Updated on October 2, 2023 by Mitch Rezman

Today’s science lesson: because birds are small and have a high need for energy they can digest food rapidly. This is one reason young birds mature quickly and migrating birds are able to store fat which enables long flights. There are species of birds that are known to increase their weight 40% in 10 days.

Birds may break up their food or crush it with their bill, they don’t chew it. Parrots, birds of prey, and finches have short, thick, fleshy tongues which allow them to manipulate their food. Where humans swallow with our soft palates, birds have to tilt their heads back to get the food from inside their mouth (buccal cavity) to the first part of their throat (Oesophagus). The oesophagus continues to draw the bird’s food down into it’s body – where it stands at the Crop.

Should You Give Citrus to Your Birds?

You know what a motorcycle rider and a bird in the wild have in common? They both rely on a 360-degree view of their environment for survival.

First, full transparency. It’s important to understand where we get the information we pass on to you from “Command Central” at Windy City Parrot which today is from any of our PCs, tablets, or smartphones we interact with daily, tens of thousands of bird owners as well as vets, manufacturers, and rescues, monthly (for the past 20 years) between our website, Facebook, Pinterest, email and other social media platforms.

We listen, we read, we chat and we draw our conclusions. Should you take what we say as gospel? Not necessarily, but it’s not in our best interest to provide bad bird care information.

3 EZ Peazy Birdcage Cleaning Tips

Last Updated on October 2, 2023 by Mitch Rezman

We’re going to start out with one of our favorite product lines Lixit. Do you really need a water bottle? Birds being the messy creatures that they are will poop in their water dishes regardless of placement.
This means the stray food, the poop, and other contaminants which carry bacteria get ingested by your bird. One of the easiest ways to overcome these problems is to install a Lixit water bottle in your birdcage.
Lixit water bottles enable you to introduce water simply for bathing and avoid having to change your bird’s drinking water throughout the day in order to keep it clean.

Tropican Sizes Are a Bit Different.

Last Updated on February 16, 2023 by Mitch Rezman

Due to our new extrusion operation at Hagen Industries, our Tropican sizes are a bit different. And, notably the Sticks and the Biscuits. These lots are just now coming to the US inventory.

The formulas, flavor & nutrient content, are the same high quality as before…in fact better. For about 10 years Hagen Pet Foods in NY had extruded our Tropican, in addition to our other extruded consumables (small animal), as well as the major tonnage for our Nutrience Dog & Cat Food products.

Isn’t it Time We Had That Bird Poop Talk?

Last Updated on October 2, 2023 by Mitch Rezman

About a month ago I posted this video on our home page (we rotate videos on the home page weekly) Anyone who watches this video with birds in the room will be entertained by both bird(s) and video.

Catherine was taking care of some walk-in customers when she came to my desk and quietly said “you should greet these customers personally.” I got up and bowl me over who was it but

Gurudeva was visiting his sister here in Chicago and wanted to check our store out before returning to India via Canada. We must have been high on his to-do list. He has 1300 birds.

What Would It Be Like to Have a Large Parrot?

Last Updated on December 10, 2023 by Mitch Rezman

(Author Unknown)
Try this:
1.WASTEFUL.. Buy $30 worth of groceries and throw $24 worth in the trash as soon as you arrive home. Do this several times a month. Parrots require fresh food in addition to pellets (not seeds) and are wasteful eaters. If you can’t afford the wastefulness of a parrot, you can’t afford the parrot.

Another Timely Article About Birds and This Time About Screaming

Last Updated on October 2, 2023 by Mitch Rezman

Hello, Mitch. Another timely article about birds and this time about screaming.

I’d like to weigh in from a very limited viewpoint: one rescued parrotlet who is aggressive but trying hard to be good and, two, a peach-faced lovebird who is the combination of Bette Midler, Carol Channing, and Ethel Merman wrapped up in barbed wire.

Though their screechings can’t match the volume of the bigger guys, at full throat it can still be an ice pick in the ear. I keep cotton balls near the cage for earplugs.

How Do I Stop My Bird from Screaming?

Last Updated on October 2, 2023 by Mitch Rezman

Why does my bird scream?

Boy if we had THE answer we’d be writing this from our yacht. But of course, I have to weigh in here. What got me thinking about the subject of “why birds scream,” is some recent web surfing.

I spend my days doing what many of you wish you could be doing, surfing the web for bird toys and parrot cages.

The magic of the internet enables us to shop the world. In order for us to provide the best possible shopping experience.

We look at lots of sites and products.

Pricing is important but not our priority.
