“So, I did something that, again, I do not recommend for anyone else.

I got myself comfortable against the cage, and put my left hand into a balled fist, and let him hit me. Again. And again. And again.

Eventually blood ran down my elbow. He hit me 40+ times while I looked at him with my eyes half-lidded, calm & relaxed, glancing away as if bored from time to time.

After around ten minutes, Sammie stopped striking at me. He had a long pause, looking at me sideways, then with his head upside down.

Then he put a foot on my bloodied hand.”

Hi Mitch,

I just read your piece on eclectus, and I have a question.

If the elongated digestive tract is urban myth, then why does my bird develop the eclectus toe-tapping and wing-flipping if he has been given regular pellets and/or too many vitamins?

What would cause this?

Here’s my problem

Pikachu the cockatiel will not relieve himself in his cage.

He is usually out with us when we are home, and even insists on sleeping on me; but if we need to go out, he is caged for his safety.

In any case

All birds have a blood feather (a.k.a. pin feather) for every feather molted out.

Hi Mitch. Just a comment of concern.

Clearly, I understand the need to know a bird’s sex but I’m also very concerned about this kit that anybody can buy, including many of the idiots out there that own birds.

Editors note: not my words

Do you really want to encourage all owners to pluck their birds feathers and cut their nails too short in order to get blood for testing?

There are experienced owners out there that could do it but there are probably many more out there who could cause an emergency and pain.

I have lived with 17 budgies but I would would still go to a vet for something like that.

I wish you would write a follow up to that article to inspire caution. The article makes me very nervous frankly.

This ‘syndrome’ as vets are calling it, is referred to by many names as listed in the title of this article. For simplicity I will use the word Lockjaw.

First off, I would like to state that the following is from my own independent research while helping others and my own hands on personal experience.

I would also like to state upfront that I never bought into and was very skeptical on it being labeled Bordetella or B. Avium.
