Should I Cover My Conures Birdcage at Night?

Dawn C. asks,

My conures cage at night it is in our lounge where we watch tv hence there is some light from the tv etc.

Also, he has become quite hormonal and aggressive towards me over the last 2 months whereas he was quite the opposite before spending lots of time with me now I am very wary of him and at times fearful of him attacking me.

What can I do to get back the loving funny bird he used to be. Btw he is very gentle with my husband.

Why Are My 2 Sun Conures Suddenly Fighting After 15 Years?

Cecelia B. writes,

Hi, Mitch and Catherine,

I’ve been living with conures for thirty-five years and am seeing behavior that is new to me.

I have two male Sun conures who are brothers.

They are about fifteen years old.

Until a few weeks ago, they were a very happy bonded couple, mating frequently, grooming and feeding each other, sharing a cage, and getting along just fine.

One of them, Max, recently started pulling Min’s head feathers out, pecking Min’s head and leaving bloody spots.

How Do I Stop My Peach-faced Lovebird From Prolific Egg-laying?

Julie O. has a lovebird issue,

Hello Catherine & Mitch

We have a peach-faced lovebird named Kiki (she told us her name, it’s the only word she speaks) that was rescued nearly dead from starvation and dehydration on a busy Los Angeles street about 5 years ago.

We don’t know her actual age, but she looked to be fairly young then.

In the past two years, she has started laying infertile eggs.

What Should I Do for a Hormonal Male Caique, 17 Years Old?

Donna L. asks:

What should I do for a hormonal male caique, 17 years old?

Screaming while holding a toy with his beak on the cage bottom or screaming while hanging on the cage bars, screaming at 2:30 AM.

Losing weight, killing any toy he can find, and just starting to pick at his chest and bottom of his foot.

Editor’s note: I suggest a magnified visual of both feet bottoms seeking any sores or irritations. Endnote

Stopped eating his pellets (Harrisons), I have combined them with other pellets, not interested. Will eat them if I soak them in water and mix them with cooked bird rice and spaghetti.

How Does My Family Keep Our Blue & Gold Macaw as My Parents Age?

Kirstin B. relates

I have a blue and gold macaw parrot.

He has been in the family since he was a baby.

Sadly my great uncle was the one who got him and died shortly thereafter.

He has gone through 2 other family members until sitting with me and my dad.

My dad got him about 20 years ago and my dad was so good with him.

Unfortunately in the past 5 years, my dad has had a lot of issues with the bird.

The last year I have pretty much taken over the bird however I will be leaving the house in about a year and a half for college.

I would like to have the bird in the best state possible and have my parents really comfortable with the bird.

So far the bird is only comfy with me as of lately.

My parents have low tempers with him which they are working on.

I just want the best for the bird and would love some tips you could give me to help him feel cozier with my parents.

I’m Frustrated With Featherbrite-how Do I Fix My Lighting?

Cynthia expresses her frustration with the FeatherBrite bird cage lighting system:

I have the swag lights that require two bulbs.

I bought the 16 watts LED bulb and the UV blue bulb in September, and now they’re burned out.

I don’t even see the same bulbs as a set for sale on your site.

I have a Pagoda-style light that requires one bulb but those apparently aren’t sold for that style anymore.

I can’t keep buying lighting fixtures. Help!

How Can I Reduce My Female Cockatiels Hormonal Issues?

Hello, I’m writing this because I have a 10-year-old Cockatiel female.

I’ve had her since I was 14 and she’s the most important thing in my life.

She’s gone through a lot though and has had to survive 2 emergency surgeries to save her life.

Becoming egg-bound and near-death both of these times due to chronic egg laying.

I don’t know what to do to help.

How to Remodel a Cage to Reduce 2 Bird’s Hormonal Behavior

This thread took place during the entire month of December 2020.

Spoiler alert (also found at end of the post)

Hi Catherine I don’t know if you got my email from the other day about the lighting treatment for Reggie’s hormones.

It did the trick.

She is so much friendlier to Kiwi there was just one time she went at him when he was on his stand but it wasn’t as bad as it was before the lighting treatment.

I know you are probably so busy I just wanted to know if she starts to show aggressive behavior do we do the 72 hr or 7 days she is still a little hormonal but not nearly as bad she loves going under my blanket lol.

Thanks again for your advice it was the best Christmas present we could have asked for.❤
