Bird toys are to the bird cage, what leaves are to the trees your bird would be living in in the wild.

It’s said birds live by the 60/40 rule. They spend 60% of their time looking for food and 40% of their time trying not to be food. Looking for food is called foraging.

A Cockatoo parrot living in the wild will fly as many as 100 miles in a day. The bird will have several dozen stops and regular feeding places. At each stop they’ll use their strong beak (and claws) to look for food.

A Brief History of Bird Cages Through Time

Oriental-style cages were popular during the Deco period, from the 1920s until the 1940s. One example, probably manufactured by Hendryx, was a round, hanging pagoda-style birdcage with a brass-wire seed screen and side-out tray (above).

The bottom was fastened to the top part of the cage with small, attached brass clips. On some models from this era, the clips were adorned with small owls or little figures of Asian men. (more…)

How Are Indian Ringneck Parrots as Pets?

Sunshine, my Lutino (Yellow) Indian Ringneck Parrot was by far the best pet bird I have ever had of all the birds we had.

My then husband bought him as an unweaned baby and I completed the process. I found that Ringneck Parrot babies need to be hand fed and beg, but don’t open their mouths to accept the syringe, they require a bit of prying open with the opposite hand’s fingers in order to slip in the tip of the syringe or pipette. Then it was no trouble at all.

Quickie Rundown on Cockatiel Care Chapter & Verse

Cockatiels are the smallest, actually a miniature Cockatoo, and is from Australia. The only bird more popular with caged bird keepers is a parakeet (budgie).

 

The Cockatiel is biologically classified as a genuine member of Cacatuidae because they share all of the Cockatoo family’s biological features. They are the only Cockatoo species which can sometimes reproduce by the time they are one year old.

 

The Cockatiel’s distinctive erectile crest expresses the animal’s state of being. The crest is dramatically vertical when the cockatiel is startled or excited, gently oblique in its neutral or relaxed state, and flattened close to the head when the animal is angry or defensive.

Does It Matter What Sex My Bird Is as Long as He or She Knows Its Name?

Why is DNA so VERY important even for your non-breeding parrot?

 

About 20% of parrots, like budgies, eclectus, and cockatiels that are sexually dimorphic.

 

That means that the gender of the bird can be identified by physical differences.

 

In the case of budgies and cockatiels, they have to reach near-adulthood to exhibit differences while Eclectus are readily identifiable upon feathering out the first time since females are red and blue while males are green.

Cook Comfort Foods for Your Birds

The weather is cooling off and humans like to begin cooking comfort foods such as pots of chili, chicken, and dumplings, bean soups, and other hearty meals to warm the tummy and spirit. The same applies true to your parrots.

 

As the weather becomes colder, we slowly lower our indoor temperatures unless we don’t care how high our heating bills run.

It is important to remember that if you are cold, your birds are chilly as well and need to have supplemental heat such as thermo perches or heated cage panels that allow them to position themselves at the temperature they prefer. (more…)
