Can You Stop A Bird From Biting

Last Updated on June 28, 2019 by Catherine Tobsing

Hi Mitch,

In my limited experience with biting birds, I can share what happened to work for me.

We have a bonded male and female S. I. (Solomon Island) Eclectus both birds got along well with us and others.

The female, Mia, would let me hold her, she would sit with me, she would step up when I presented my hand.

But if she perched too long on my hand or if I got up from sitting on the couch with her she would go after me and bite!

Laurie C asks

My husband and I rescued a 3-month-old medium Sulphur-Crested Cockatoo (aka Eleonora cockatoo) from a horrible pet store situation last August.

We finished his hand-feeding which took another month.

He was very skinny and underfed so we have spoiled him rotten.

Over the past few years, we’ve been emphasizing the proper use of man-made lighting and its effect on pet birds.

Search results when googling the term “pet bird lighting” predominantly yield links to products relating to lighting for pet birds.

With the exception of Windy City Parrot and the Lafebers blog, it is difficult to find information about pet birds and the many ways light affects them.

I Have An African Grey And A Triton Cockatoo.

I hand fed both and have had the Grey since 1985 and the Cockatoo since 1987.

They are housed separately in AE birdcages and I have perches around the house for them to move to as I work around.

Both are female.

My Gray has begun acting strange.

How Do I Pet My African Grey Parrot Without Getting Bit

Last Updated on May 31, 2019 by Mitch Rezman

It’s a bird, not a dog and doesn’t necessarily want to get pet.

Birds want to be preened.

Re: “Larry’s was more direct”.

He let himself get bitten.

He made a fist to lessen the amount of skin the bird could get in his mouth and just let him bite.

Spoiler alert: Your mother’s day gift is at the bottom.

Having 11 birds, 10 budgies and an African ringneck, we get it.

Living upstairs of our new facility, Keto (the ringneck) sleeps on the second floor with us but spends the day supervising mom in his “office cage (below).

“Keto’s a biter”.

If he is within 2 inches of skin he will lash out and bite.

How Important Is Artificial Lighting For Pet Birds

Last Updated on February 16, 2023 by Mitch Rezman

Our first answer comes from a question on Quora

Do parrots we rear at home need sunlight?

Firstly, lets set the record straight.

No amount of natural sunlight nor artificial light will help with the production of any vitamin in a bird’s body.

This is because of the dual integumentary systems of feathers and skin.

We can’t thank you enough for your patience as we had to shut down shipping last week while we began to organize our new workspace.

There are a host of reasons that we made this move aside from saving money on rent, utilities and taxes.

Interesting to note is that when you operate an Internet retail company, you can run it from anywhere on the planet, as long as you have a high-speed internet connection.

Why is My Severe Macaw is Losing All Its Feathers?

Last Updated on September 29, 2023 by Mitch Rezman

My severe macaw is losing all its feathers.

The vet says I should switch her to 80% pellet food.

However, I am not convinced. I don’t think they eat pellets in the wild.

I am trying adding HARI Prime vitamin, mineral, and amino acid supplement w/probiotics to her diet.

Do you think this is an acceptable alternative?
