Do You Offer Bird Training? We’re Considering Adopting an Older Bird From a Shelter.

Dear Alyssa,

Unfortunately, birds are not like dogs and training is not something you can pass off onto a service to do.

You will have to do it within your family and household.

Dogs like to be told what they should do and not do as they live to serve their owners.

Carla H. wants to know about lighting for my parrotlets.

Hello,

I am needing assistance in finding the best lighting for my parrotlets.

I have spent countless hours reviewing the lighting needs for my pets and am more confused than I was about this topic than when I started.

Learn How Gordon Controls Bird Cage Ants W/ Isopropyl Alcohol

Last Updated on February 16, 2023 by Mitch Rezman

Gordon T. relates about his success controlling ants with isopropyl alcohol

Our Senegal parrot, Frisbee, spends warm weather days on our screened-in porch, where he has a stainless steel cage.

Ants are a serious problem.

We were able to control them by placing the cage rollers in shallow water containers, but Frisbee started drinking the water.

On the theory that ants swarming on bits of his treats were following scent trails laid down by “scout” ants, I started wiping the bottoms of the legs of his cage with 90% isopropyl alcohol first thing every morning.

The alcohol evaporates almost immediately, and it is still 30 minutes or so before Frisbee goes out.

Can My Quaker and Lovebird Share a Cage?

Last Updated on February 16, 2023 by Mitch Rezman

Sharyl R. asks about birds sharing a single cage.

I have a Quaker and a lovebird and they are inseparable.

They have recently become roommates.

Their cages are next to each other with doors kept open.

They stay in the Quakers cage, Kas.

Is it ok to keep them together?

My Quaker does get aggressive if I go to get Jelly, my lovebird.

Are Lafebers Avi Cakes Good for Birds with Fatty Liver Disease?

Last Updated on February 16, 2023 by Mitch Rezman

Henie L. would like to know if Avi Cakes are good for birds who have had Fatty Liver Disease

For a little over a year, I have fed my Conures only fruits, veggies, and pellets.

The previous winter, I was stupid and simply fed them seeds.

My question is I have Avi-Cakes here that I feed my Parakeets.

I would like to ask you a question about my parakeet.

I have been thinking she could use a vitamin/supplement.

She has a very good appetite and is active but she is eating like nobody’s business.

I eat mostly organic pasta, and fruit, and a lot of baked potatoes.

Also some fish now and then.

Does My Parrotlet Need a Full Spectrum Light Source?

Last Updated on February 16, 2023 by Mitch Rezman

Chris S. reached out to ask,

Does a parrotlet need a full spectrum light source?

And if so does it need it all year round if living in eastern PA?

Dear Chris

Unless you are living along the equator, no, natural lighting is not going to replicate what tropical birds need to keep their hormones level.

Should I Clip My 3-month-old Budgie’s Wings So I Can Tame Him?

My answer to a Quora question

We have 10 flighted birds in our home.

7 budgies (all rescues) never leave their large aviary and keep themselves organized and busy all day.

Our rescues African Ringneck, Blue Quaker, and Grey cockatiel all came to us clipped.
