Two New Birds

Kriselle and I had chatted on the phone a month ago.

She shared her plans to bring two baby birds into her home.

She was taking a year off from work and felt it would give her the opportunity to make the right home for the birds.

I’ll make a note here that I recommend she start leaving the house about 3 months before returning to work starting with shorter periods but ramping up to full 8 – 10 hour days to help the birds adjust to a “prolonged absence”

Researching Parrots as Pets ~ Parrot Rescue by Rodney Foster

I would like to use this article to encourage people on the importance of researching all the information they can get to include reading, visiting zoo’s, and even try and find someone that has a Exotic pet they are thinking of getting. In the last few years exotic pets have been taking a rise in popularity, But at the same time exotic pet deaths and abuse are high also because exotic animals do not do well in our daily life style and for the lack of people being informed of what they are getting into before buying a exotic pet.

Mark Hagen on Avian Nutrition Research

Optimum nutrition can be achieved with many different diets. However it is not easy and understanding some basic principles of the pro and cons of each food item as it relates to vitamins, minerals, proteins, fat is important when trying to make up a mixture of foods.

Wild animals and birds are shown by their parents the right combination of sometimes very limited types of foods to meet their requirements for flight, growth, reproduction and living! These wild food items have been selected through thousands of years of evolution. In captivity, they are under different conditions and eating different foods and we expect them to select the best combination immediately.

Lixit Water Bottle FAQs

Do small animals and birds need to have water bottles rather than water dishes?

From the beginning of pet keeping, animals and birds have been offered water in open bowls placed on the cage floor or mounted on the sides of the cage. This is a simple and easy way to offer the water, but we now know that the water in open dishes is easily contaminated. Food particles, droppings, pet hair and any other contaminants carry bacteria into the water and pollute it. Some water dishes attempt to prevent this with partial “hoods”, but are still open to having pollutants flipped or tossed into the water supply by playful animals or birds in the midst of wing flapping exercises
