Can You Stop A Bird From Biting

Hi Mitch,

In my limited experience with biting birds, I can share what happened to work for me.

We have a bonded male and female S. I. (Solomon Island) Eclectus both birds got along well with us and others.

The female, Mia, would let me hold her, she would sit with me, she would step up when I presented my hand.

But if she perched too long on my hand or if I got up from sitting on the couch with her she would go after me and bite!

Should We Anesthetize Birds for Exams and Blunt Their Beaks?

The following comment is in reference to a blog post entitled  “How To Stop An Indian Ringneck Parrot From Biting

Russ commented:

FIRST OFF, Blunt Keto’s beak at the vet.

My vet is Scott McDonald, who puts all birds under gas for examination & grooming (STRESS FREEEEE).

His clinics are several per month in his Clarendon Hills home.

The best of the best.

SECOND: as with my 15y.o. Pionus, teach Ketto the difference between GOOD & BAD (or NO GOOD), by saying REPEATEDLY OVER & OVER AGAIN & AGAIN “Good Boy!”

Every single time Keto does something good.

Can I Grab My Parakeets While In Their Cage

First of all, people who state absolute truths about bird care as in yes and no have much to learn.

To answer this question with an emphatic “no”, begs even more queries:

  1. It’s time to take the bird to the vet, how do I get it from cage to carrier?
  2. The bird is sick or injured in the cage, now what?
  3. How do I get the bird to examine it?
  4. What if I need to weigh the bird?

If you just want to let the bird out by opening the cage door have you examined your home?

Can You Address Feeding And Care For Larger M2s (Moluccan Cockatoos)?

Think of a bunch of garden hoses banded together arbitrarily shooting water out one or the other.

As opposed to a “firehose” of information.

Now you know what fielding questions about captive bird care looks like to us.

We don’t know where it’s going to come from – Disqus, our blog, one of three ways you can contact us directly on  the website or email.

Just organizing the questions is a task in-and-of-itself.

Is My Blue and Gold Macaw Biting Me Because of Displaced Anger?

Nancy H wrote:

Dear Mitch and Catherine,

I own a Blue and Gold Macaw that I’ve had for 23 years, I love him dearly as he’s been, my little companion and roommate.

The problem is and I’m hoping you can help is that I’m not able to have my family or friends over because Bernard will literally take a tantrum screaming until I go in and get him and bring him out to see who’s there and when I go to bring him back to his cage, he bites me hard with displaced anger.
