Did a 6 Week Absence Cause My Budgie’s Negative Behavior?

Hi Mitch,

My name is Barbara T, and you and I just spoke re my parakeet, Ricky, who has been treated by an Avian specialist, Gloria Goodman, VMD (website: avianexoticvetpa.com), for mites since July 2nd, 2020.

As I told you, I had surgery and my sister took care of the bird from May 12th through June 28th.

I noticed immediately that his face looked like it had rot on it and he seemed “antsy”—pecking on his feathers and rubbing his head, especially around the eye area, on the cage.

I called the vet and she saw him on July 2nd.

How Do I Get My Bird to Accept a New Playstand?

Cynthia L. needs a bird feeding dish for her new bird’s stand:

The bird stand that I have came with stainless steel, 8 oz. bowls, my Grey loves to grab them and flip everything on the floor.

I need a heavy bowl that will fit.

Next, tell me how I get her to accept the nice new stand.

I have it in the same room, now 4 ft away from her cage.

If I have her on my hand and we walk anywhere near it, she will fly away.

How Do I Care for a Splay Legged Parakeet?

Suzanne H. is concerned about a Splayed leg 1-month-old parakeet.

My parakeets had 4 chicks. 3 are fine.

The youngest turned out to be a splayed leg.

Went to the vet with the baby.

He said there is just a 10% chance the baby could be fixed to be almost normal.

It didn’t work.

How Do You Rehabilitate a Biting Senegal Parrot?

The following is in response to our feathered community member Patrick.

Hi Patrick B,

I have a 27-year old Senegal.  I was reading your post and thought I would offer a few suggestions to you. First, as Mitch said, try clicker training.  It is basically positive operant conditioning.  Birds do not understand the word “no” and yelling at them will teach them how to scream.  So please give it a try.

How Can I Achieve Better Birdcage Environments for My Birds?

Hey there, here for the brunch, but I’d like to speak to the manager, I just have a question or two before sitting down:

So we have a 2 bird, 2 human family.

The littlest one, a GCC named Pz is the comedian and energy ball of the group, with tons of personality packed into a 70gram feather suit.

Our sanity these days hinges upon making sure the bird children are well taken care of, as we spend all our days with them now and find it very enriching to be attentive to their unique needs and the interesting ways in which they communicate them to us.

Does My Birds Need Heated Perches and Warming Panels?

Barbara D. wonders:

I have 2 Blue Fronted Amazons.

I have a heated Thermo Perch in the cage but am concerned about the winter room temperature when I bring the birds out to the living room in their cage to be with us, their room is set for 68/69 but the living room is more like 66.

So I thought the Snuggle Up panel might be good to add to the perch.

They have not checked out the warm perch yet.

I have seen them on the heated perch in the winter before, this perch is second to lowest perch in their cage.

Should I raise the perch a bit higher?

How Do I Rescue Someone Else’s Macaw?

Shelly A. wants to help another owner’s macaw

There is a greenhouse that changed hands a year ago, and they have a Macaw named Baby, in a chain link dog kennel type enclosure with one toy, no perches, no real interaction, and lives on parrot kibble like a stray dog.

I’ve spoken with an employee, but Baby doesn’t have an owner, just a business bird that nobody really takes care of.

The employees do the best they can, I just recently moved into this area or I would have done something sooner.
