Hello, I enjoy your site and your advice very much.
My wife and I just got our hand raised Budgerigar, the bird is very affectionate and spends quite a bit of time on our shoulders.
Recently it has started to preen us, the issue is that it’s preening can be painful as it will focus on skin imperfections or small folds of skin and nip quite hard.

Yes, my birds are fed ‘chop’ (Arlo the grey, calls it ‘bobbity’) This is a new term for what I have done for 28+ years.
Chop is chopped veg, grains, and sometimes, a tiny bit of seed sprinkled on top or a bit of walnut, or something.
I used to cut the vegetables larger because Arlo was pretty accepting of lots of things, and I didn’t have a food processor.
I also (now) feed Arlo a pelleted diet, along with the chop.
She also gets a small amount of fruit, and sometimes about an inch square of chicken breast (baked) or some steamed scallop (yum).

Since being stuck at home during Covid and not being able to shop as needed (we are both 71) we have really started sprouting alfalfa seeds at home.
We always liked alfalfa sprouts and now it is an easy way to have something fresh.
I have 2 parakeets…is it safe for them to eat freshly sprouted sprouts?

Is it absolutely necessary that my budgies be let out of the cage? One got out twice and was out 3 hrs refusing to get near his cage.
Finally, I had to catch him and put him back.
Did everything to get him back in…treats, toys.

I purchased what I hoped was a male for my pink eyed yellow female Flash.
“Tiki” turned out to be a female and right about that time I had to move in with my elderly mother who had 2 back fractures and the birds came with me.
I also have another bonded pair male/female but the male is very old and past breeding age.

We have a young (1 yr) female budgie that suddenly (overnight) became wobbly, has a hard time perching, tucks her head in her wing, and has lost interest in all budgies in the flight (12) even a best buddy.
