To start with, begin understanding the scope for your choice of pet birds. Here is a list of more than 500 species you can choose from each having its own nuances.
I stress making this distinction because so many people talk about things like “make sure you don’t get a bird larger than a conure or a parakeet”.
If you break down that statement it’s really nonsensical because conures range from 64 grams (green cheeks) to 280 g (Patagonians) the size of a Timneh African Grey.
Cecelia B. writes,
Hi, Mitch and Catherine,
I’ve been living with conures for thirty-five years and am seeing behavior that is new to me.
I have two male Sun conures who are brothers.
They are about fifteen years old.
Until a few weeks ago, they were a very happy bonded couple, mating frequently, grooming and feeding each other, sharing a cage, and getting along just fine.
One of them, Max, recently started pulling Min’s head feathers out, pecking Min’s head and leaving bloody spots.
Monica D. asks,
I have a question.
I have a parakeet and I know that certain smells and chemicals can affect them.
I was wondering if the smell of brewing coffee would affect my bird in any way?
Marylinda J. would like to know,
I have appreciated your products and your information for many years.
I recently became licensed in the State of Texas to produce animal feed.
In particular, dehydrated restaurant-quality chicken feet and paws for pets.
Susan F. is concerned,
I just noticed a patch of black on Seymour’s right side just now.
Should I be overly concerned about this enough to get her in to see the vet?
I have been giving Seymour 1/2 of a strawberry almost every day for the past two weeks.
Could that be causing this?
Also, I have been trying to file Seymour’s nails with a crystal file for the last several weeks on Sundays to get her used to it and to do a little at a time…perhaps 5 mins because she pulls away so often.

Michael G. relates,
Y’all have approved of my feeding practices but I have a question.
After trial and error, I have gotten the size pellet the grey’s need.
I am using Roudybush medium Daily Maintenance.
I am always in search of treats and supplements to make them “happy” as they seem to be.
I am wondering about using the California blend.
Julie O. has a lovebird issue,
Hello Catherine & Mitch
We have a peach-faced lovebird named Kiki (she told us her name, it’s the only word she speaks) that was rescued nearly dead from starvation and dehydration on a busy Los Angeles street about 5 years ago.
We don’t know her actual age, but she looked to be fairly young then.
In the past two years, she has started laying infertile eggs.
