How Do I Rescue Someone Else’s Macaw?

Shelly A. wants to help another owner’s macaw

There is a greenhouse that changed hands a year ago, and they have a Macaw named Baby, in a chain link dog kennel type enclosure with one toy, no perches, no real interaction, and lives on parrot kibble like a stray dog.

I’ve spoken with an employee, but Baby doesn’t have an owner, just a business bird that nobody really takes care of.

The employees do the best they can, I just recently moved into this area or I would have done something sooner.

I Am Conflicted About Artificial Lights for Birds ~ Help

David K. is conflicted:

I am conflicted about what I read about artificial lights for birds.

I have cockatiels.

My avian vet says to be careful about such lighting which can damage a bird’s eyes (retina).

My vet has had first-hand experience with this.

I currently use ZooMed Avian sun lamps, overhead.

Should Our Greys Birdcage Be Covered at Night?
African Gray Parrot sits on cage and sleeps. Playful and affectionate bird able to talk. loving and friendly social companion bird. stunning dusty-gray color and looks quite similar to a pigeon

Should Our Greys Birdcage Be Covered at Night?

Jim G. inquires:

For many many years, we have covered our Greys cage at night.

Then about 10 years ago I met a woman who is a certified African Grey rescuer. She said ABSOLUTELY NOT!

That parrots of course originated in natural environments and had to be at all times able to detect danger.

How Long Is Too Long for Birds in Travel Carriers?

Judy M. worries about:

Hi, Mitch,

The closest avian vet to me is 2 hours away, I worry about my bird being in his travel cage or carrier ( as I have both) for so long, the trip there, the trip home, the visit itself…..

Do you think it would be extremely stressful for Alex?

He has been to an exotics vet, who is only about 15 minutes from me, he was fine.

How Do I Transition 8 Amazons and 2 Macaws to a Large Aviary?

Barb H. asks:

I’d appreciate advice on integrating parrots into a 36′ X 10 communal aviary for 8 amazons & 2 macaws.

These birds have all lived together in the same room divided by partitions. Although separated, they can see each other and communicate.

Since they’re familiar with each other, I’m hoping for a painless transition.

How Do I Get Rid of Bird Food Moths?

Solomon L writes:

I have a problem with little moths which seems to come from the bird food, they are very annoying.

I have an aviary inside the house with canary and finches, it is 8 feet tall 5 feet diameter in the circle connected with a 6 feet flight path with 8 canaries and 12 finches.

I use the Kaytee brand finch food for finch and the one for canaries.

Before when I had the Higgins premium brand I had no problems, but I could not find so I switched to Kaytee.
